Angel Questions

Angels ask good questions. In John 20:13, they asked Mary at the empty tomb of Jesus, “Why are you weeping?” And in Acts 1:11, they asked the disciples who had just seen the risen Jesus ascend into heaven, “Why do you stand looking up into heaven?”

These were great rhetorical questions! Mary had no cause for weeping since Jesus was no longer dead. He had risen from the grave. The tomb was empty because he had resurrected! And the disciples had no reason to keep gawking into heaven. They had a job to go and do. Jesus would empower them to do it by the Holy Spirit he had already promised them. He hadn’t left them alone!

We might ask ourselves the same questions. Why do we stand here weeping? Why do we stand here gawking? Why do we circle around in our anger or frustration when we know that God is working all things for good for those who love him (Romans 8:28)? Why do we stumble about in defeat to our sins, rather than fight them, as though Jesus were still dead in his tomb? Why do we surrender to hopelessness when he is alive? Why do we keep looking backwards to better times as though Jesus weren’t in power today? Why do we remain prayerless when he is with us each day? Why do we ignore our Bible when it contains the words of life? Why do we listen to the fearmongers when we have nothing to fear because we know the one who makes Satan afraid?

Why do you stand here weeping? Why do you stand here gawking?

Good questions, angels! Thank you for that!
