Good: Romans 8:28

God’s will for you is good.

Are you a follower of Jesus? That means “you love God.” Here’s what Romans 8:28-31 has to say about your whole life:

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified” (ESV)

Does “everything happen for a reason”? You bet. And the first reason is to bring you to love God, to woo your heart. Maybe you aren’t a Christian, but you can become one by telling God in your heart that you put your trust in Jesus. That Jesus died on the cross for your sins, that he rose to life again that third day, and that you believe that in doing so, he accomplished a payment for you that you can never pay, only receive. You can say, “God forgive me and save me, through Jesus Christ.” Without Jesus, it’s nothing but hell: futility and false gods in this life and everlasting condemnation (that you will not enjoy) in the next. But with Jesus, it’s steadfast love forevermore, and a fulfilled plan that takes you all the way to a glorious eternity with him.

And if you are a Christian, you can remember that God’s will is good. He’s called you, and he will fulfill his purpose for you. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones, a London pastor in the 20th century, wrote in his commentary on Romans 8:28 that sometimes a nice watch has gears going in opposite directions. Take the face off and take a look. It might look confusing. How could gears going in opposite directions turn out to tell the time correctly? And so your life might feel like situations going in opposite directions, opposite of what is good and necessary and enjoyable, but the watchmaker knew what he was designing with those gears, and the watch keeps perfect time. You can rest in the design of God. He will fulfill his purpose for you. His will for your life is good.
