Well-Suited: Ephesians 2:10 + Psalm 138:8

A bookshelf is made to hold books. A Corvette is engineered for speed. A sink is meant to hold a specific volume of water. A Frisbee can be expected to cut through the air to a waiting friend. Like these things, you too are up to the challenge. Never worry that you aren’t. Whatever you face now, and whatever you think God might call you to face soon or someday, remember that God’s will for you suits you.
We read in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (ESV).
We compare that to Psalm 138:8: “The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands” (ESV).
Now we do a little matching game with the underlined words:
1. Work of his hands (Ps 138:8) Workmanship (Eph 2:10)
2. Purpose for me (Ps 138:8) Good works that God prepared beforehand (Eph 2:10)
If you have put your faith in Jesus, then you have been “created in Christ Jesus.” You have been remade through faith in what Jesus has done for you, as he took your sins as his own so that he can give you his righteousness as your own. Now then what follows?
You are created for good works prepared in advance. That is God’s purpose for you. This isn’t a call to moralism (be a good boy or girl) but a call to the gospel (you are remade with a purpose through Jesus). And these good works are the beatitudes, the armor of God, the fruit of the Spirit, etc. (the basics), as well as the use of your unique giftedness suited to your unique circumstances, challenges, and tests. And you are well-suited for these unique challenges. God will fulfill his purpose for you.
A well-made bookshelf, by a skillful carpenter, will hold the right weight of books. A well-engineered Corvette, by engineers who know what they are doing, will not fail when it gets pushed past 100mph. A correctly designed sink won’t leak but hold its full volume of water. A well-crafted frisbee will cut through the air to its designed distance.
You are well-made too, by the same craftsman who invented the Milky Way galaxy and the human brain. You have no need to fear. What God has given to you, as well as how he may call you to glorify Jesus is how you are suited. When it’s hard, you pray, and you remember that “God will fulfill his purpose for me” and “I was created for this!” You are well-suited for this day.
