Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let Earth receive her King!

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing!

Christmas celebrates the birth of a King who would die for our sins, be buried, rise again, and reign over all death and life. He would cancel the curse by becoming a curse, and with the curse canceled, the death it brings is abolished. Christmas is about the inbreaking of a King. Isaac Watts, in his “Joy to the World,” gives voice to the world celebrating it’s king.

The line “Let every heart prepare him room,” reminds each of us to join the celebration. Jesus is King, whether you vote for him or not. What joy if you would make room for him in your heart as the world must make room for him on its throne!

And what have you to fear if you know this King? If he reigns in your heart, then you are on his side, and nothing stands against him. How does the fact of his reign influence your outlook?

For to us a child is born,

To us a son is given;

And the government shall be upon his shoulder,

And his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end,

On the throne of David and over his kingdom,

To establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness

From this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV)
